Austrian Alps 2024 🇦🇹

I traveled to Austria in late July for nine days of hiking in the Alps and a day of sightseeing in Salzburg.

My friend Allan and I joined up in München (Munich) and traveled down into Österreich (Austria) to hike hut-to-hut on the Venediger Höhenweg (high trail) in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Osttirol (East Tirol), and then back up to Salzburg for a day of sightseeing before returning to München and flying back to the US.

I used a guidebook for much of the planning, Trekking in Austria’s Hohe Tauern, along with a variety of websites and blogs. Some of the huts were reservable through the Hut Reservation service; others required email with the hut’s manager.

Many of the photos were shot on my Sony a6400, some by Allan on my Panasonic ZS200, the remainder by Allan or I on our phones (Google Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro respectively). I edited all of the photos in Adobe Lightroom. All photos are also on Flickr.

I created the interactive maps (the ones you can zoom in/out and are more green and white colors) using Leaflet and the API from the Verwaltungsgrundkarte von Österreich (Administrative base map of Austria). I created the “static” maps of each route using QGIS cartography software, digital terrain models from Land Tirol, and geo data from Open Street Map (high-res PDF versions of my maps available on request).
