Day 8: Gasteretal
Today I hiked up the Gasteretal valley (also known as the Gasterntal), which lies behind the peaks visible from my hotel room and is protected and undeveloped except for a few rustic old hotels and a farm.

Day 7: Gemmipass and Oeschinensee
A long day of hiking up to the Gemmipass, back across Kandersteg, up to the Oeschinensee, and back to the hotel.

Day 6: Griesalp to Kandersteg
I hiked the long way around to Kandersteg from Griesalp via the Höhenweg Nordrampe instead of taking the more direct, and steep, route over the Höhturli.

Day 5: Gspaltenhornhütte to Griesalp
Today began with some initial disappointment at having to abandon my plan to go up the Hohtürli to the Blümisalphütte and instead descend to Griesalp and then take an alternate trail around to Kandersteg the following day.

Day 4: Gimmelwald to Gspaltenhornhütte via the Sefinenfurgge
Today I undertook the Sefinenfurgge, the first of two of the highest passes on the Alpine Pass Route.

Day 3: Kleine Scheidegg to Gimmelwald
A stunningly beautiful day of hiking over 12 miles from Kleine Scheidegg to Gimmelwald, via Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Grütschalp, and Mürren.

The toilets here are remarkable in the consistency of operational controls, consumable materials, and overall experience.

Day 2: Kleine Scheidegg and the Eiger Trail
A 10-mile day with segments through Grindelwald, from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, and the Eiger trail from Eigergletscher to Alpiglen. Incredible mountain scenery, delicious food, and mountaineering history.

Day 1: Schynige Platte to First
A classic Swiss hike from Schynige Platte to the Berggasthaus First (mountain guest house at First) with stunning views of the Eiger and other high peaks of the Berner Oberland.

Day 0: Travel to Switzerland
I traveled by air to Zürich via London, and then by train via Bern and Interlaken to the village of Wilderswil at the base of Bernese Alps.
